Working Group on
Low Carbon Construction Solutions

The built environment contributes around 40% of global CO2 emissions, of which half is generated from construction materials. There is a growing awareness in the market of the urgency of tackling these embodied emissions, but multiple sectoral-level challenges exist. Low-carbon materials are typically expensive, not available in high qualities, and there is limited knowledge of how to specify them as part of a project brief. None of these problems can be solved by individual organizations, so industry collaboration is critical.

In 2023, the Hong Kong Proptech Alliance and Hongkong Land, in collaboration with RESET Carbon, launched the Working Group on Low Carbon Construction Solutions. The working group intends to tackle the problems associated with low-embodied carbon construction by working in four main areas:

Provide Technical Guidance on Low-Carbon Construction

In September 2024, the Working Group on Low Carbon Construction Solutions released its first technical product, the ‘Technical Procurement Guideline on Low Embodied Carbon Construction’. The guideline is intended to provide a standardized framework by which organizations can plan and execute low-embodied carbon projects, and includes advice on:

Material Selection
Team setup and project flow

Performance Tracking
